When to Feed Box Hedging

Learn More About Box Hedging

Buxus sempervirens, also known as box hedging, is often used in formal garden designs especially in Rose gardens and for the edging of kitchen gardens, herb beds and parterres. Box hedging can also be grown in cottage gardens to edge beds of perennials or bulbs and along pathways. Box hedging is easy to care for and can be shaped by pruning into obelisks, cones, pyramids, balls or anything creative. It’s also popular because Box is very tolerant of many growing conditions from drought to shade and clay to sandy soil and is an evergreen, so there is interest in the garden all year.

To grow thriving hedging plants, it’s important to know when to feed box hedging to ensure they look their best all year in your garden.

Box hedging is one of the most well recognised and loved hedging plants. We have a range of box hedging options available here at Hopes Grove Nurseries perfect for the home gardener and professional gardeners alike – explore the range below.

Different Types of Box Hedging

Box hedging from Hopes Grove Nurseries is available in many different shapes and sizes. The beautiful green leaves of Box compliments many other hedging plants and flowering perennials.

Ball Shaped Buxus

Box Balls are easy to grow and very popular. They look great in pots either side of a doorway or planted as edging. Common box can be grown in most soils but does particularly well in well drained soil and full or part sun positions. They can be trimmed in early June and anything throughout early summer.

Cube Shaped Buxus

For something a little more formal, cubed shaped box hedging is a good option. These can be trimmed to keep them in a cube and grown in pots or in the ground.

Egyptian Pyramid Shaped Buxus

If you are looking for Box hedging that is both formal and interesting, try Egyptian Pyramid shaped plants. They stand tall in a container and add some height and interest in garden borders.

Cone Shaped Buxus

Another Box hedging shape that makes lovely architectural additions to any garden. Cone shaped Buxus are ideal for adding height in borders or pots.

How and When to Feed Box Hedging

Knowing when to feed Box hedging is key to growing thriving plants. It’s an important part of ensuring Box plants look good all year and better able to possibly recover from pests and diseases such as Box Blight and Box Tree Caterpillar

Feeding Box Hedging

Most importantly ensure the soil that plants are growing in is healthy and well drained. Feed the soil with some mulch every spring using well rotted organic matter such as homemade compost, leaf mulch or manure. During spring and summer, apply a well balanced fertiliser to help growth as long as it isn’t too heavy on nitrogen. Feeding with a Comfrey or Seaweed feed are also good choices.

Watering Box Hedging

Box plants will need watering, especially during dry spells and after first planting. Plants in containers will need more frequent watering and feeding  as they will dry out quicker.
