What is a mixed native hedge?

A mixed native hedge is usually a mixture of different species, such as Quickthorn, Blackthorn and Hornbeam. The exact mixed native hedging depends on the individual’s requirements and interests. We have a range of native hedge mixes available depending on the type of hedgerow you’re looking for.

Mixed native hedging adds beauty to the English countryside, distinguishing boundaries between fields, woodland and roads. As a necessity in creating a habitat for many wild creatures, mixed hedging benefits the environment, marking the landscape with colour and life.

Over the past few decades, there has sadly been a decline in mixed native hedging. We’re here to help encourage and boost hedgerow mixes back into life and the environment with our varied collection of native mixed hedges.

How do you care for mixed native hedges?

Mixed native hedging plants will grow into a dense, intruder-proof hedge, helping hedges meet boundary requirements and provide shelter and food for wildlife. Our hedgerow mixes are suitable for growing hedges of 120cm and upwards.

To care for a mixed native hedge, we’d recommend pruning from August to February but always check for nests beforehand. For max wildlife value we suggest following a biennial process so that one side is cut each year, leaving the other with the berries.

Our hedgerow mixes are available bare-root from November to early April, except for potted plants, which you can plant anytime throughout the year.

When planting your mixed native hedging plants, we recommend single-row planting with three plants per metre or five plants for a staggered double row with 40cm between plants and the same for a complete double row. For a dense and fast-developing native mixed hedge, you can use seven plants per metre in a double row.
