The stunning, ornamental Paper Birch tree will grow in almost all soils and conditions from full sun to part shade. With a breeze and the light through the tree, the leaves and bark look mesmerising. This tree grows at a fast rate of up to 40cm per year with a mature height of about 12m, although can grow taller over many years. Planted alone, or in a group, this Birch tree will grace your garden for many years. For a mix of Birch tree colours, Betula papyrifera can also be planted alongside Birch ‘Royal Frost’ for some spectacular colours. Birch trees suit all gardens especially woodland gardens, urban courtyards and cottage gardens.

Paper Birch is a popular choice for gardeners and has been seen in many show gardens due to their beautiful calming appeal. They also provide essential habitat for wildlife. Paper Birch can be planted in most soil types, preferring moisture and full sun to partial shade but thriving just about anywhere in many environments, including exposed coastal areas. Dig a hole slightly bigger than the rootball and as deep as the roots before incorporating some well rotted organic matter into the hole. Plant with the top of the rootball level with the soil and water in well.

All Birch trees are easy to grow and care for. Pruning is only needed to remove dead, diseased, damaged stems or to inhibit the growth and keep it to a size you would like. Pruning should be undertaken when the tree is dormant over winter and never when the sap is rising which will cause the tree to ‘bleed’ which may further damage the tree. After planting ensure regular and thorough watering so the roots establish well, especially during the first two years and in dry spells.

Betula Papyrifera Paper Birch Garden Trees

Betula papyrifera (Paper birch, Canoe Birch)
Betula papyrifera (known as Paper Birch) is a stunning tree with peeling white bark and a reddish/orange bark underneath. The bark turns more white as the trunk grows wider. As a deciduous tree, the yellow and orange leaves in autumn eventually fall, leaving a stunning structural tree and white bark throughout winter. With so much varying interest throughout the year, Betual papyrifera always has something to enjoy including the yellow and brown catkins in spring, before green, large leaves throughout spring to autumn. This wonderful Birch tree will grow in all soils and even cope with long dry spells and wetter weather. Grown as a tree on it’s own or planted as a group with other Birch trees in larger gardens, this is a tree for every and any garden.
