Weeping Willow Salix Chrysocoma Garden Trees

Weeping Willow (Salix supulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’)
This Golden Weeping Willow is a wide spreading, glorious tree which grows vigorously into a dome shape with wonderful arched branches. Unlike some other green Willows, the Golden Weeping Willow is covered in lovely golden yellow leaves, turning greener as they mature. In spring, catkins grow amongst the leaves providing extra spring interest. Even though Willow is deciduous, the golden yellow bark gives plenty of colour during the winter months. Golden Weeping Willow may seem familiar as this can be seen often growing alongside rivers and water ways, due to its love of moist soils.

The stunning Golden Weeding Willow has a dome shape, with long drooping stems, full of golden foliage and can grow up to 15m at maturity (20 years) and 6m wide. Willow thrives in a sunny environment with space for the wide canopy to grow. If planting in a smaller site, make sure you have time to regularly prune it to a smaller size. It’s a superb choice for a garden with moist, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It is very suited to different gardens and can be pruned to keep smaller if space doesn’t allow for the full size. Having received the RHS Award of Golden Merit, this Willow is a wonderful tree to grow and will be equally enjoyed by garden wildlife.

Pot grown plants can be planted any time of the year as long as the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. Dig a hole wider than the pot size, add in some Rootgrow to the planting hole and plant level with the surrounding soil. Then backfill the hole, firm down and water well. Apply some mulch around but not up to the stem to help retain moisture and control weeds. Bareroot plants should be planted between November to April.

Most importantly, water newly planted Salix regularly to help it establish, especially throughout dry spells because this does prefer moist soil. Pruning time is ideally from late winter to early spring with the aim to remove all dead, diseased or damaged branches and any needed to maintain a shape or size. After pruning, apply a balanced fertiliser to promote new growth and mulch the soil to retain moisture.
