Pennisetum alopecuroides Hameln

Pennisetum alopecuroides Hameln (Fountain Grass)
Deservedly one of the most popular grasses stocked at HGN, Pennisetum Hameln grows into a tidy low bun shaped mound of deep green foliage topped by soft pinkish flower heads during the Summer months that sway and move in the wind, gently arching like small bottlebrushes. By Autumn the foliage has turned to hues of yellow and then brown for the Winter.
The Hameln Fountain Grass is ideal for mass planting, to soften the edge of paths or structures and they make a very good foil for other flowering plants including Spring flowering bulbs, their colourful display kicking off your flower beds before the Hameln grass comes into its own later in the season. This is also a lovely container plant.

Pennisetum alopecuroides Hameln grows best in conditions of full sun, in a well drained soil.

Pennisetum alopecuroides Hameln is a deciduous grass, the old foliage should be left over the Winter as this will protect the crown of the plant from inclement weather conditions and will still provide structure and interest, especially on frosty days. Cut them back close to the ground in February or March before the new foliage emerges. The cut stems and foliage is useful as a natural mulch or may be composted.
