Fast-growing, hardy and architecturally exotic looking and rather beautiful, Bamboo hedging is a superb choice to create screening and privacy in your garden. These handsome evergreen plants originate from Asia and are becoming increasingly popular in elegant planting schemes throughout the UK. Supremely versatile, bamboo can be planted along borders and boundaries to deliver screening and define areas, but are also wonderful planted in large pots as part of planting schemes and bring stylish and graceful touches to patio and roof gardens.
Bamboo hedging has attractive slender, lance shaped leaves in a variety of colours depending on the species that are borne on robust upright stems. Its fast growing nature – with some varieties putting on up to 75cm per year – make it a very popular hedging choice for swiftly bringing interest and privacy to the garden. A true positive of bamboo hedging is its ability to reduce noise and it is a fantastic absorber of carbon dioxide and toxins from air pollution, whilst also being a very efficient oxygen producer, all of which makes it a particularly excellent choice for planting in urban areas with the benefit of helping the environment.
Whilst not commonly thought of as hedging, these hardy, handsome and versatile plants have become incredibly popular due to their swift growth, but in particular for the pleasure they can bring when seeing their leaves and stems rippling and swaying in the breeze and hearing the soothing rustle of their foliage as they move. Wonderful as a more ornamental backdrop to other planting and as a taller screen set behind a variety of grasses or wildflowers, or indeed planted as the focal point in the centre of a bed to bring height and interest.
Very low maintenance, in the main, bamboo thrives best in a sunny location, however it will happily grow well in partial shade and will do best in moist but well-drained soil. As a lover of nitrogen, bamboo will reward you with extra growth and bushiness when given a regular feed during the growing season! An annual haircut can keep their growth in check and encourage bushier growth.
We stock and sell a number of varieties of pot-grown Bamboo on our nursery –
Bamboo Black Stemmed – A gorgeous striking variety with black stems to contrast beautifully with the lush green foliage
Bamboo Golden – A wonderfully bright and cheerful variety with fresh green stems that turn golden as they mature
Bamboo Showy Yellow Groove – An attractive and slightly unusual variety with new stems that start pink and turn bright yellow with a striking green groove as they mature
To give your Bamboo hedging plants the best very chance to thrive it is always advisable to prepare the ground as well as possible and follow the planting guidance we e-mail on confirmation of order. A hard copy of this planting guidance leaflet is also sent out with every order. We always recommend the use of the Mycorrhizal Fungi Rootgrow which enhances a plant root system and the use of the slow-release fertiliser Bonemeal to encourage faster establishment and a more drought resilient hedge with a stronger root system.
