Berberis juliane will grow at a moderately fast rate, soon forming a dense shrub or hedge, of up to 3m in good conditions. It is one of the evergreens that ensures there is something interesting to enjoy in the garden all throughout the year. Although planting in full sun is preferable, it will tolerate shade and is one plant that will even grow in dry shade. Berberis juliane will grow in most soils, as long as the soil is well drained because just like any Berberis, they won’t tolerate sitting in waterlogged soil. The difference with Berberis juliane compared to the green Berberis Thunbergii is both the varying foliage colours and julianes evergreen nature
Firstly wear thick gardening gloves and sleeves because Berberis has very strong, long, prickly thorns. Wintergreen barberry can be planted in any well drained soil, from sun to part shade and is a great plant for hedging in coastal areas, but is very tolerant of all aspects. With a growth rate of up to 30cm per year, make sure it has enough space to grow and space 30 to 45cm apart if growing as a hedge. Place your shrub into the ground and back fill so the ground is level with the top of the root ball or surface of the potted plant. Mulch around the area with some well rotted organic matter, avoiding the stem.
Wintergreen barberry will soon grow into a dense, protective hedge. To keep it in shape and pruned to size, wear some thick gloves and sleeves to protect against the shape thorns and prune straight after flowering in late spring if required. Berberis doesn’t routinely need pruning, but it is helpful if growing into a hedge or to maintain it’s shape and size.
