Few shrubs give so much early spring colour at such modest cost, Flowering Currant makes an excellent and rather alternative hedge – or a more mainstream border shrub.

This is a robust and reliable deciduous shrub, grown for its pendent clusters of deep crimson early season flowers that are much appreciated by pollinating insects, later in the season rounded black fruits are produced. The mid to deep green foliage is scented, especially when crushed. Ribes King Edward VII is an upright shrub with strong branches making it a useful flowering shrub for giving height in smaller gardens.

Flowering Currant King Edward VII is a popular choice for shrub borders, gardeners value the colourful flowers early in the season, they can be teamed up with Spring flowering bulbs or early flowering  ground cover plants for a bold splash of colour well before many other plants in the garden get into their stride.

Flowering Currant Hedge

This is also an excellent plant for a more informal flowering hedge or screen, if the shrubs are set at 3 per metre  (further apart if you are patient) an attractive hedge can be grown within a few seasons, our strong potted plants will outperform bare root plants and give the best results. Flowering Currant hedges can be easily maintained at a height of 90-150cm or more.

Flowering Currant King Edward VII is an easy plant to grow, they are content in all types of well drained soil inconditions from full sun to moderate shade, once established they are a drought tolerant shrub. Hedges are best trimmed immediatly after flowering, although they need little maintenance, solitary shrubs should also be prined after flowering to keep a good shape and remove any congested or dead branches.

How to grow Flowering Currant King Edward VII

Position: Full sun, partial shade, moderate shade.
Foliage: Deciduous shrub, leaves drop from the plant in Autumn and fresh new ones emerge in Spring.
Soil and site: Any average well drained soil.
Flowering time: April and May
Growth rate: slow/moderate
Ultimate height and spread: 180cm high x 150cm wide.
Hardiness: Fully hardy.
Aftercare: Water regularly after planting and for the first season. Trim hedges and shrubs in Spring after flowering.

Exceptions to our delivery charges are Scottish Highland and Isle of Wight delivery areas where we need to charge a little extra to cover the cost of deliveries to these outlying areas. We don’t currently delivery to other offshore addresses including Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.

Tall plants over 2.5 metres have to be delivered by our own specialised transport, our delivery area is limited to mainland England and Wales only.
