Lonicera nitida Baggessons Gold is an attractive cultivar of Lonicera nitida or hedging Honeysuckle which originates in parts of China, where it can be found at heights of up to 3000 metres growing in scrub form along the banks of streams, and usually flowering in June.
If unclipped small creamy white fragrant flowers will appear at the end of spring followed by purple-blue berries however if left unclipped it will become quite unruly and difficult to control since at a height of about 150cm it will start to flop over. As well as well clipped hedges Lonicera lends itself to being used for topiary shapes since the foliage is so tiny and growth if trimmed frequently is very compact, it is also used quite often for Bonsai. Trimming would usually take place in spring or autumn or if necessary both.
Lonicera nitida Baggessons Gold is a reasonably hardy plant best planted in fertile, well-drained soil and in full sun to get the best leaf colour however it will do well in light shady places. It is suitable for hedges between 30-100cm and grows at a rate of approximately 15-25cm per year and planting for a hedge is recommended at 3-4 plants per metre. Generally pest and disease free Lonicera Baggessons Gold is good for planting in coastal areas as it can tolerate some salty air.
Pot grown plants such as Lonicera are a very convenient way of planting as if you have a large quantity to get into the ground, they can be planted at leisure since they will sit quite happily in the pots until you are ready. Another advantage of potted plants is that they are usually available all year round so can be planted any time.
