Olearia X Haastii Hedging

Olearia x haastii (Daisy Bush)

The glaucous leaves of Olearia x haastii are light green on the top surface with a felted underside, in mid summer the plants are smothered in masses of small, yellow centred daisy like flowers. This is a tough and hardy shrub with a naturally bushy habit of growth that will make a fine windbreak or informal hedge in any sunny and well drained site, especially by the sea where the plants are unaffected by the strong, salt laden winds.

Olearia x haastii is useful not only for hedging, they fit perfectly into mediterranean themes and would associate nicely with all types of silvery plants too. Like all evergreen shrubs, Olearia x haastii can make a good structure plant in your garden design providing height and interest through all seasons. The flowers are a good food source for pollinating insects including bees.

We supply well established young plants in 2 litre pots that are equally suited to growing as shrubs or as a hedge.

The Daisy bushes are tough easily grown evergreen shrubs. A profusion of creamy white yellow centred daisy like flowers. Ideal for low hedging and as individual shrubs. The two-tone glaucous foliage is popular with garden designers as it fits well with mediterranean and silvery foliage design themes as well as the ‘nonna chic’ trend.

The growth rate of Olearia x haastii is typically 30cm per year.

Site and soil – any normal well drained soil but they will also thrive in windy or exposed and coastal conditions. This is a very drought tolerant shrub.

How many plants? – we recommend 3 plants per metre when planting a hedge of Olearia x haastii.

When to plant? – these are pot grown plants and so can be planted at any time of year as there is no root disturbance. Adding Rootgrow when planting is proven to improve establishment and early growth. Keep the young plants well watered for the first season while they establish, especially on free draining soils.
