Rosa glauca requires a position in full sun with moist but well drained soil. It’s a fast growing shrub Rose reaching a mature height of 2m and each plant will spread about 1.5m. The stems of this beautiful Rose are arching, which gives it an informal look with open, flat, bright pink flowers. The thorns are small and barely there on the reddish grey stems, hidden in summer by the grey green foliage. It really is a pretty shrub. Ideally situate in an open, sun filled site but this shrub Rose will tolerate some partial shade.
Rosa glauca should be planted into fertile, moist and well drained soil with plenty of sunshine. Bare root plants can be planted between November to April into a pre dug trench with some well rotted organic matter incorporated into the soil. If growing as a hedge, plant at least 45cm to 60cm apart to allow for their natural spreading habit. As with Dog Rose, these can be planted as a single row or a double staggered row at 5 plants per meter. When planting potted Rosa glauca, dig a hole larger than the container, plant into the hole with the root ball level with the surface of the soil. Backfill with soil and water well. Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to help suppress weeds, retain moisture and as they are establishing, water regularly.
This is a hardy shrub and needs very little ongoing maintenance. Watering is needed as the plant is establishing, preferring water at the roots and avoiding watering over the plant which can encourage disease. Pruning can be down in winter or in early spring before new growth which is just to remove dead, diseased, crossing or damaged material and to keep a balanced shape. Remove longer and weak stems ensuring to cut just above a leaf node or outwards facing bud. This will encourage new growth. Older stems can also be cut back to the ground as Rosa glauca flowers on new wood.
