Sarcococca Winter Gem (Sweet Box, Christmas Box)
This beautiful variety is a cross between ‘Purple Stem’ and humilis with all the good qualities from both parents. Neat, tidy and compact with deep green evergreen foliage, the young stems have an attractive purple flush to them setting of the highly fragrant pink tinged, white flowers. This immaculate little shrub is in flower from December through until March, filling the garden with its fragrance. As the flowers finally pass, spherical red berries appear and finally ripen to black continuing the season of interest right through until Summer. Despite being such a dainty, beautiful and fragrant plant, this is a very tough and hardy little shrub.
Sarcococca Winter Gem shrubs are perfect for shady borders or containers and their dense bushy growth makes them a good plant for hedging or as an edging to paths and paved areas, in particular as a Box replacement. They are easily maintained at a height up to 50cm with a light trim after flowering to keep them dense and bushy, they are a great source of structure, colour and fragrance during the Winter. This variety also makes perfect evergreen gound cover, slowly and surely colonising difficult shady areas where few other shrubs or garden plants will thrive.
Sarcococca Winter Gem is an easy, low maintenance shrub. They thrive in shade rather than the sun, either moderate or dense shade is fine. Once established they are very tough and drought tolerant although they do appreciate a generous mulch in spring. Like other varieties, this Sweet Box is also one of the few shrubs that grows well in damp shade.
