Thuja hedging is one of the easier conifers to identify – just look closely at the glossy evergreen foliage and you will see it arranged in flattened sprays, almost like miniature fans. Rub the leaves and they give off a distinctive pleasant scent (some say pineapple, some say pear drops).
Thuja hedging plants are suitable for a wide range of hedge sizes, from lower screens of 120-150cm right up to several metres or more. Thuja hedges are fast-growing and (unlike similar conifer hedges like Leylandii) can regenerate from old wood even if cut back hard.
Thuja hedges grow solid and dense, which makes it a great hedging plant to use in exposed areas, providing shelter and shade for people and small animals. They can also be trimmed to form sharp borders and creative shapes, so whether you need hedges or topiaries, Thuja hedging is an excellent choice.

Thuja hedging is very easy to grow. It doesn’t need lots of sun and thrives well in shady conditions. It tolerates any soil conditions, from thin and chalky to heavy clay, as long as it isn’t completely waterlogged. Thuja hedges also fare well in exposed areas, where they can provide necessary shelter and screening.
To ensure your Thuja hedge doesn’t turn brown, water well and occasionally feed with liquid fertiliser.
