Living screens are pre-grown screening units made from a galvanised metal grid that is already covered in vegetation. The plants have been pre-grown in a compost filled biodegradable planter made of coconut fibres that is integral to the base of the screen. (The bottom of the metal grid has been formed into a ‘U’ shape that the planter sits inside). After installation (planting the base of the screen in the ground) the plants will root out into the surrounding soil and the coconut fibres will completely degrade within a couple of years. This is a great product for providing instant, durable screening. The galvanised grid is impenetrable and offers great security while the vegetation coverage softens and screens to provide both privacy and remarkable landscape impact right from the moment they are planted.
Living screens are only 20cm deep meaning that they take up less space than a conventional hedge making them a great screening solution in any situation where space is at a premium. Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) living screens are supplied at a height of 155cm and the screens are 120cm wide (allow for 130cm when using 75mmx75mm support posts).
To plant your living screens you will need to prepare a trench 40cm wide and 40cm deep (the rootball is 20cm x 20cm but they required soft and well prepared backfill soil all around the rootball so that the new roots can grow easily). Add plenty of a good quality peat free soil improver (well mixed in) before planting to give them a good start.
Using treated softwood support posts and brackets is strongly recommended, these will provide support to the screens for the first season or two while the roots get well established. The metal screens are 120cm wide (so 5 screens will cover 6 metres without posts being used).
If you choose to use posts and brackets the posts should be set at 130cm centres in which case 5 screens will cover 6.5 metres
Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) living screens available at an above ground (after planting) height of 155cm, the recommended support post for this height is 2400mm with 4 brackets (one top and bottom on each side). You will also need one extra post more than the number of screens ordered to complete the run.
(Living screens, posts and brackets are delivered directly from our suppliers. We can only supply the posts and brackets when they are ordered at the same time as the living screens and are unable to deliver them separately)
