Euonymus alatus Compactus

Euonymus alatus Compactus (Winged Spindle, Firebush)

One of the finest shrubs for autumn colour, this delightful plant has been given the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society. Native to Japan, China and Korea this plant is fully hardy for UK gardens and a relative of our native Spindle.
It is a bushy and dense growing deciduous shrub with narrow pointed deep green leaves that turn to brilliantly vivid and rich hues of crimson and pink in autumn, it looks stunning when caught in the autumn light. Additional seasonal interest is provided by attractive red-purple fruit which split open to reveal orange seed which are well loved by birds and other wildlife.
Once the long-lasting display has finished and the leaves have fallen the intriguing stems are revealed. The bark has unusual and attractive ‘wings’, cork type ridges that rise above the stem surface and give Euonymus alatus its common name of Winged Euonymus. Small greenish flowers appear in May and June.
