Viburnum opulus Roseum

Viburnum opulus Roseum
The Snowball Bush as it is often called is an ornamental variety of Guelder Rose with large round creamy white flowers in summer and autumn foliage of purple and red making a handsome and very ornamental shrub that is very undemanding and easy to grow. The round flowerheads start off chartreuse green in bud before maturing to pure creamy white and are much in demand from flower arrangers.

Viburnum Opulus Roseum is a member of the family Adoxaceae which is a collection of both deciduous and evergreen shrubs. Snowball Bush as it is commonly known is one of the deciduous varieties used more as a specimen shrub with its attractive white pom-pom flowers and is an ornamental variety of the Guelder Rose native to Europe, north Africa and central Asia.

The name Guelder apparently arises from the fact that Viburnum opulus Roseum originated in Gelderland which is a province in Holland. There is however a link to the Ukraine as Viburnum Opulus is one of its national symbols and is frequently mentioned throughout its history.

These shrubs are grown for their ornamental value and the Snowball bush is no exception as the eye-catching flowers emerging in early summer make a wonderful statement in the garden and the maple-like lobed foliage of Viburnum Opulus Roseum turns rich hues of purple and red in autumn adding immensely to its appeal.

Snowball Bush is quite a tolerant plant as it will grow well in most soils although preferring the ground slightly moist and will cope with sites from full sun through to some shade. Viburnum Opulus Roseum will make a remarkable informal hedge of between 1.5-2metres high. We would recommend 3 plants per metre for a hedge and trimming after the flowers have finished.
