Viburnum bodnantense Dawn
This is a very hardy shrub producing the deep rose-pink flowers which will fade to candy floss pink and eventually to white by late spring. In the summer the stems bear very attractive round purple berries against the foliage of large leaves which are oval in shape and toothed at the edges and with deeply scored veins which gives almost a quilted appearance.
The leaves fade from dark to light green and then to maroon-red in autumn before they drop and are superseded by the spectacular flowers. This means that Viburnum Bodnantense Dawn gives a long period of interest in the garden making it a perfect choice for prominent borders to be viewed with amazement.
It is also extremely useful for attracting insects with an early and late supply of nectar and prefers to be grown in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Growing up to approximately 3 metres in height it can provide a brilliant display in winter either as a specimen shrub in a border or as a winter flowering hedge but can be kept as low as 1.5 metres responding well to clipping which should be carried out just after flowering.
