English Yew Spiral Shape.
English Yew is often referred to as the King of Hedges on account of its lustrous deep green foliage that can be trimmed neatly into almost any shape. These attributes also make this an ideal topiary species, the fine foliage trims perfectly and with a modest growth rate our Yew Topiary Spirals can be kept in tip-top condition with a clip just once a year in late Summer. (For a very fine ‘show garden’ look you could clip in late spring/early summer after the first flush of growth, and again in late Summer to clip any secondary growths)
English Yew Spiral shapes are suitable for positions of full sun or partial shade and any soil type is suitable as long as its not waterlogged.
English Yew Spirals are very easy to grow, like their counterparts commonly used as Hedging Plants, the only real dislike this adaptable species has is poor drainage. When planting on heavier soils its worth adding some grit or sharp sand to improve the drainage. These Yew spirals also make a dramatic impact when grown in large pots, be sure to use a well-drained and gritty compost with some ‘crocks’ at the bottom so the pots don’t hold water. The plants will give several years’ service before they inevitably outgrow their containers and need to be re-potted into larger ones, or planted into a final position in the open garden.
